The Season 1 Retrospective
It is hard to believe, but the first season of Catching the Editor’s Eye has come to an end!
Over our first eight episodes, we interviewed designers, strategists, and futurists who all discussed how they are building brands on their own terms. To be honest, every one of these conversations left me incredibly inspired and with a lot to think about. Now that we’ve officially wrapped, I wanted to pull together the overarching themes of our debut season. From the power of human connection to defining our values, here are the four main takeaways from our debut season:
Listen to the Episode Here
Humans are a Company’s Strongest Asset. If there is one truth that emerged from this entire season, it’s that despite the rapid rise of technology, human relationships remain at the heart of the fashion industry. Every guest, from American designer Zang Toi to Lori Kirkland of DeepHumanX emphasized emotional intelligence and genuine empathy as the keys to building a brand with staying power. In a world where AI is constantly discussed as the future of business, a brand’s greatest asset isn’t the tech it deploys, but rather the human mind behind it, and the real-world relationships we choose to nurture.
The Logic of Independence. For decades, the fashion establishment has laid out only one pathway to success for emerging designers: scale rapidly, seek outside investment, and partner with boutiques and department stores for wholesale distribution. Our guests this season proved that this model is not the only way to build an independent brand. Instead, they championed independence. When you control your capital and your narrative, you protect your margins and your business. Strategic independence is about giving yourself the freedom to build a business that serves your creativity, your values, and your bottom line.
Curation as the Antidote to the “Sea of Sameness.” Walk through any major department store or scroll through social media today, and you’ll notice that the fashion landscape has become increasingly uniform. This is the direct result of designing by spreadsheet and over-relying on predictive algorithms. In a world where everyone has access to the same trend reports, curation and a distinct point of view is your ultimate competitive edge.
Stewardship and the Ethics of the Future. My last takeaway is a call for personal accountability. From setting our own ethical guardrails around the use of AI to building cleaner, local manufacturing, our guests discussed real ways to change the fashion industry for the better. We even discussed the idea of stewardship, including how we treat our communities, whether it was about respecting the client on the retail floor or using our social media platform to speak up for what matters.
When you connect these four dots—human relationships, business independence, curation, and stewardship—you realize that building a modern brand is not about chasing the next trend cycle. It is about evolving the industry by going back to where it began, by anchoring its future in true craft, real relationships, and lasting substance.
Julie and I are already hard at work putting together Season 2. In the meantime, I want to thank every one of you who has subscribed, listened, and shared this space with us.
